Mind, Body, & Spirit
We are a volunteer organization and outreach program of the Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, committed to improving the lives of people in the poorest region of the Western Hemisphere’s poorest nation.
About Our Organization
Since 1999, the Haiti Outreach Program (HOP) has been a joyful bridge connecting our Knoxville community with our sister parish, St. Michel, in Boucan-Carré. Together, we’ve been making a real difference by supporting children’s education, providing healthcare in remote villages, and helping to nurture faith communities in one of the world’s most underprivileged regions. It’s all about coming together and making a positive impact!
Mind (Education)
In partnership with the Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and St. Kateri Tekakwitha in Yorktown, VA, we fund two schools with over 1,200 students in attendance: a primary school (École St. Michel) serving Kindergarten through 7th grade, and a high school (Collège de St. Michel). Donations cover tuition, teacher salaries, books, uniforms, and—when possible—a daily warm meal that may be a student’s only one.
Body (Health)
In the remote village of Bouly, accessible only by a five-hour mountain trek, we support the area’s only medical clinic. Donations support the salaries of two nurses and a doctor, as well as essential medicines, vaccines, and supplies. Two nurses and a doctor rotate care, and together, they care for 60–80 patients per week.
Spirit (Faith)
We provide Fr. Lamarre, the parish priest of St. Michel, with an annual budget to serve nine rural chapels, train sacristans, and support the growing faith community. In 2022, with help from St. Anselm Parish in St. Louis, a new chapel was created in a formerly unused building and now serves as the central worship space.
